Designed as an early intervention strategy, the School Attendance Initiative program works with area students and families to help keep children in school.
Local elementary schools identify those students at risk or currently showing truant behavior and make a referral to a Catholic Charities case manager. The case manager then meets with the student and family to assess their needs, identify barriers to school attendance and helps them meet some of those needs.
Some family needs include appropriate school clothing, furniture, food, medical assistance, financial assistance and homelessness. The case manager will work with the family as long as necessary to ensure that the children are able to attend school consistently and break the truant cycle.
Services provided may include parenting education and skill building; clothing, health care, financial aid; education, employment and job training; and mentoring..
