Miriam House

miriamhouse-200

The name, Miriam House, reflects the importance of Miriam, sister of Moses, who stood by him from his birth and assisted him throughout her long and dedicated life.

Catholic Charities opened Miriam House in 2000 to  provide transitional living for up to two years for homeless women and their minor children.

While in this safe environment, residents are provided with life skill training, referrals to other services, educational opportunities and case management services. The focus is to help the residents identify issues that have contributed to their homelessness and develop skills needed to become self-sufficient in order to end the cycle of poverty.

Catholic Charities thanks all who have so generously suppored Miriam House shelter for homeless women and children.  If you would like to continue to support the shelter we are in need of the following:

Stories of Hope

Providing a Safe Environment

Life takes a positive turn for domestic violence victim.

“When I first came to Catholic Charities, I needed a place where my daughter and I would be safe,” domestic violence victim Sondra said.

Since leaving her boyfriend, Sondra has been making a lot of changes, including undergoing counseling. “My counselor is helping me take responsibility,” she said. “I can see more clearly now that my life is the result of choices I make, not just a series of things that happen.”

With Catholic Charities’ guidance, Sondra has also found a job in a food processing plant. “I was very fortunate. I found a job in about a month.”

But Sondra is proudest of the job she’s done with her daughter. “Even though I may have made of mess of things in my own life, I’ve been a good mom. I’ve always kept my eye on her. And now I’m so proud of her. I know she’ll do well.”
