Catholic Charities Collects Donations for Oklahoma Tornado Victims

Catholic Charities is collecting donations for disaster relief following the tornadoes that struck cities in Oklahoma on Sunday and Monday.  Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo will direct 100 percent of all donations to Catholic Charities of Oklahoma City

The Oklahoma agency is assisting at disaster recovery areas and will also provide long-term counseling and case management for families and individuals of all faiths who have been displaced by the tornadoes, said Sonny Wilkinson, associate director for mission advancement for Catholic Charities of Oklahoma City.  The agency will provide assistance for at least a few years to help families rebuild their lives, he added.

In November, Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo collected $116,000 for Catholic Charities agencies providing disaster relief after Hurricane Sandy.

“Our local community responded overwhelming to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy in November and also to help victims of tornadoes that struck our area in 2010,” said Rodney Schuster, executive director of Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo.  “For those who would like to help those affected by the recent storms, your generosity is greatly appreciated.”

Donations for Oklahoma tornado victims may be sent to or dropped off at Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo, 1933 Spielbusch Ave., Toledo, OH 43604. Checks should include “Oklahoma disaster relief” in the memo line.  Donations may also be made by credit card by calling 419-244-6711, ext. 218.

Pastoral Ethics Workshop

Catholic Charities is hosting a Pastoral Ethics Workshop in August.

The workshop will feature Pat Oedy-Murray, who will discuss topics relevant to parish staff and volunteers. These topics include managing relationships, embracing confidentiality when ministering to others, and knowing and respecting the difference between power and authority in ministry. Oedy-Murray will also discuss whether having certain life experiences, such as illness, death or divorce, would automatically qualify a volunteer or staff member to serve in that particular ministry or if something more is needed.

Three workshop times will be offered in Toledo and Findlay. The first option will be Saturday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Diocese of Toledo’s offices at 1933 Spielbusch Ave., Toledo, Ohio 43604. The second and third options will be Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at St. Michael Parish, 750 Bright Road, Findlay, Ohio 45840.

A prepaid $10 non-refundable registration fee is due one week before the selected workshop date or is $15 at the door, space permitting. Beverages and light snacks will be provided.

Stories of Hope

Nurturing Families

Toledo couple grateful birth mothers chose life.

Like most parents, John and Amy Schnorberger, of Sylvania, are grateful to God for the gift of her children. But their gratitude is also directed toward specific human beings – the birth mothers of Katy, 7, and Drew, 5.

“To us, these birth families are heroes. They did what was best for the children, and not necessarily what was easiest for them at the time.

“At our house on Mother’s Day, these women are very much honored. It means so much when they tell us, ‘Every time we see you with these kids, we know we did what was best for them.’

“And we’re grateful to Catholic Charities for helping us become the family we are.”
